Question: Who Made the First Rockets?

Answer: More than 2300 years ago, Archytas of Tarentum, a Greek scientist constructed a bird from wood. He then produced steam within the bird which escaped from its tail, making it fly around the room, creating a crude rocket. This kind of device could not be used to fly into space, since it requires oxygen.

Other ancient scientists experimented with propulsion, but it was the Chinese who began developing rockets. Although their early efforts were more like fireworks than modern rockets, they are direct ancesters of the devices used today to send the space shuttle into space.
