The lines of our number one in our space songs countdown may have been an indication that our fascination with astronauts was dimming. By the time of the third Lunar Mission, it took a
near catastrophe to again grab the attention of the public. There were just 4 more Lunar Missions.
In 1972, Elton John, a rock star in his own right, sang, "All this science I don't understand. It's just my job 5 days a week." That was also the last year that NASA astronauts, or anyone for that matter, visited the Moon. Apollo 17 returned to Earth on December 19 of that year. Perhaps being an astronaut had suddenly become just another job.
The Space Shuttle era has not garnered the same kind of excitement. It took another tragedy to again bring the space program to the attention of the world. Most people can remember where they were and what they were doing when they learned of the Shuttle Challenger explosion.
The current "big thing" in space now is the International Space Station. Although this could be the first step to much larger ambitions, it has yet to be seen whether this will excite the public. Still, the arts, and music continue to keep space in our minds and hearts. So, the Number one Space Song is Elton John's "Rocket Man."

When the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft launched in 2003, it was carrying the British lander, The Beagle 2, named for the ship that carried Charles Darwin on his famous journeys. Programmed into the Beagle 2 lander is the recording "Beagle 2" performed by the British pop band Blur. The band helped raise funds for the Beagle 2 lander mission. If everything goes according to plan, the song will be played back to Earth on Christmas Day 2003, a day before the Beagle 2 is expected to land on the Martian surface.
What kind of space songs will be big as we expand our exploration to reach for other star systems? As our knowledge of astronomy grows, and technology improves, tastes in music continue to change. Will the next group of musical tributes even be rock songs? Like the Beagle, will the music, itself, help support space exploration?
