Love Tip: Clashing Elements
Aug 19th 2011, 10:00

Since love is not always about the easy path, many are drawn to relationships that have a built-in edge or sense of struggle. There's a sense of excitement, since the stakes seem high. When there are clashing elements, that pressure can be a motivating force. It takes effort to get along, when the elements are at odds. The risks are great and the rewards are great, too.

Air and Water

These elements are strange bedfellows, and it takes work to bridge the gap. Air signs (Libra, Aquarius, Gemini) are social and relate through the intellect. They think their way through life. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) come from a subjective, personal perspective that's about feeling their way through life.

With effort, air signs can learn to share their emotional life. And water signs can benefit from the emotional distance of air signs. Water signs might learn to be more objective about their story, instead of swimming in it.

Earth and Fire

This is a combo that can be mutually destructive, or tough and enduring, like a piece of molten steel shaped in a forge. If earth (Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo) is too cautious, conservative or rigid, it can dampen fire's enthusiasm. And without grounding, fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) depletes earth signs, and makes it hard to find a footing in the relationship.

If these two elements hang in there through the difficulties, they can be a formidable team. Fire can learn to be more practical, and "earth" the creative inspirations. Earth benefits from the enthusiasm and joie de vivre of fire, and this brings out in earth, a sense of play, celebration, adventure.
