In astrology, the planets are archetypes with longstanding universal meanings. They are cosmic forces with associations to mythos and art. They're impulses of the body, soul and psyche that shape our lives. The ten major planets are the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Earth is the home planet, and the vantage point of observing the fixed stars, wandering stars (planets) and is in motion itself around the largest cosmic body -- the Sun.

Many astrologers include Chiron, a supersized comet known as the archetype of the wounded healer. The South and North Nodes of the Moon are significant chart points (not planets) where the Moon's orbit intersects with the Earth, along the ecliptic.

Personal Planets

Each of us moves in our own personal universe, and the personal planets represent instincts that move in all of our lives. They are specific to our time and place, the energetic blueprint we embody, drives, desires, and ways of perceiving reality.

The personal planets are the Sun, Moon, Mercury Venus and Mars.

The Sun

The instinct to shine, move into the world, make an impact, fulfill life mission, leave a burning impression on others, radiate the true self. Vitality and nurturing through warmth, encouragement, infusion of energy.

The Moon

Origins, the instinct to comfort self and others, inner reality that's beyond words and private, reactions in crisis.

Mercury

The instinct to know the world, and share observations, impressions, dots connected.

Venus

The instinct to experience love and friendship. Well-being, art, abundance (wealth), joyful living.

Mars

The thrust of action, sex drive, passion, physical vitality.

The Social Planets:

Jupiter and Saturn are a bridge to the transpersonal planets and a complementary pair. Jupiter is expansion; Saturn is consolidation. They're symbolic of our instinct to expand into society, and see where we fit in to the big picture.

Jupiter and Saturn represent the ideals and traditions interwoven into society. Seeing beyond the personal sphere, we're able to understand our lives against this larger backdrop.

The social planets inspire us to contribute to the culture or hold up standards. It's the realm of public roles like educators, visionaries and artists. It's the realm of societal control and aspirations of freedom.

Jupiter

The instinct to grow beyond known limits, evolve, trust life, embody high ideals, travel, seek knowledge.

Saturn

The instinct to consolidate what's been created, to create viable life structure, create order out of chaos.

The Transpersonal Planets

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are larger-than-life forces of high impact, that feel like encountering something beyond the personal, thus trans (beyond) personal. An experience of the transpersonal leaves us totally changed. They each carry demands and rewards, of evolving awareness(Uranus), mystical union (Neptune) and claiming of shadow/power (Pluto).

Uranus

What rattles the cages and inspires change, breakthrough, stimulation. The instinct to be free, to follow own path, to be part of an inspired movement.

Neptune

The experience of other dimensions, ecstasy, a dissolving of barriers, illusion and disillusion, the instinct to experience non-ordinary consciousness (through art, drugs, ritual). Pluto

The instinct to go to the source of a wound, fear or sense of being controlled. Composting of soul, to create fertile ground. Courage to surrender and be transformed. A death and rebirth.
